In most of the ceremonies held in the Islands today, Western
tradition dominates, but there are a number of Hawaiian customs

that can be incorporated into your ceremony that will give you that
Hawaiian flavor!
For example, the traditional flower leis are given as a gesture of
congratulations and aloha (love) to those celebrating a milestone
or receiving an honor. Leis are worn around the neck, and are
usually made of tropical flowers such as tuberose or plumeria, or
maille (green, shiny leaves) or nuts and berries. For weddings,
many times youll see friends and relatives giving the bride and
groom leis on the day of the wedding, as well as for several days
afterward.
As a symbol of longevity and good luck, a bride and her wedding
party will fold 1,000 tiny golden origami cranes with the groom
contributing the final crane, for a total of 1,001. The cranes are
then flattened, mounted, framed and presented at the wedding
reception as a good-luck keepsake for the couple.
At traditional weddings, a guest braids coconut fibers into a rope,
known as aha, which suggests the twining of two lives. If its
more convenient, brides and grooms can integrate a pre-braided
rope as part of the wedding decorations or wear small bracelets of
the braided fiber as a reminder.
Honi is the affectionate touching of noses (kind of like the
Eskimos, only different!) The couple prefaces or follows the
nuptial kiss with a nose rub.
Hula, of course, is the traditional dance of Hawaii, and there is a
different hula for almost every occasion, including weddings.
The hula can be performed before, during or after the
ceremony and the significance of the dance can be
explained for those guests who arent familiar with it.
