Hawaiis History
Hawaii land of spectacular natural beauty and high-rise resorts,
black sand beaches and moonscape volcanoes quiet, off-the-
beaten-track getaways and party-until-dawn nightclubs. Hawaii is a
land of contradictions, plunked right down in the middle of the Pacific
Ocean, a little bit of heaven right here on Earth.
But who settled this paradise originally? Prehistoric travelers had to
know when they first laid eyes on this place that it was a keeper
cant you hear some ancient mariner saying Beach the boat, boys
were not going any further! (Thats what I would have said!)
In reality, anthropologists think that Polynesian islanders were the first
people to see Hawaii, probably from the Marquesas Islands in the
South Pacific which would have meant a journey by canoe of some
2,000 miles! And this probably happened around 300-500 AD,
when there werent any GPS tracking devices or Coast Guard rescue
boats. Man, those guys were brave!
At any rate, the first dwellings on the islands were heiaus or
temples, sometime around 500 AD, and no doubt constructed by
grateful sailors to give thanks to the gods for letting them arrive safely.
By about 900 AD all of the main islands were occupied and religion
was flourishing with two principal gods being worshipped: Ku, the
god of war, and Lono, the god of peace and agriculture.
Then sometime around 1200 AD the Tahitians barged in, took over
and enslaved the Marquesasians, which was really pretty rude when
you stop and think about it. A Tahitian priest by the name of Paao
started the custom of a high priest line of rules for each island, and
brought a buddy of his over from Tahiti by the name of Pili, who
became the founding father of the Kamehameha royal family.
Hawaiian society started to evolve and settle down, and up until 1778
things were pretty peaceful some inter-island squabbling and
territorial issues, but for the most part everyone behaved themselves.
Of course, when you live in paradise, and have the bounty of the
islands and the oceans at your feet, youre usually pretty satisfied I
mean, who needs to go off in search of other worlds to conquer?
You can sit on the beach and fish and eat poi and seaweed (at that
time about 30 different types of seaweed helped supplement the
native diet) and surf and drink beer and enjoy yourself.
Then, in 1778, that all changed the European tourists arrived in
the guise of British explorer Captain James Cook, commander of the
HMS Resolution and the HMS Discovery and ruined everything.
(Well, depending on your point of view!)
See, Cook landed on January 18, 1778 on Oahu and Kauai, named
the islands The Sandwich Islands in honor of the Earl of Sandwich
and sailed off home to tell the world of his discovery. Problem was,
he came back the next year and dropped anchor in Kealakekua Bay
on the Big Island of Hawaii, and brought all sorts of contagious
diseases with him like cholera, measles and gonorrhea which
decimated the unprotected and unsuspecting native population, who
actually had thought that Cook was the reincarnation of Lono their
god of peace and agriculture. Some estimates of the native
population in 1779 range from 250,000 people to perhaps as many
as 1 million but by the time the Europeans were done spreading
their diseases that number had dropped to a mere 88,000 by 1848.
Kamehameha I became the ruler of the Big Island in 1782 and over
the next ten years consolidated his rule; in 1792 he conquered Maui,
Lanai, Molokai and Oahu, and in 1810 he unified the Hawaiian
Islands under a single ruler himself, of course! He saw himself as
the person to bring unity to the islands, and used modern weaponry to
accomplish it after which he shrewdly supported his position by
promoting trade with Europe and the United States.
Kamehameha I died in 1819 and his son Kamehameha II (a.k.a.
Junior) took over. (Ok, Im kidding about the nickname its just
that royal families are so stuffy about names!) Anyway, Kamehameha
II set about dismantling all the trappings of the native religious
practices, and encouraged the importation of Congregationalist
missionaries from the Calvinist religion. Slowly but surely, European
religious practices began to replace ancient Hawaiian beliefs.
Kamehameha II and his wife, Kamamalu, who was actually his co-
ruler, sailed off to England, where he died of measles. (Youd think
these guys would learn at some point!)
Anyway, Kamehameha III (see what I mean?) assumed control, and
in 1842 the United States recognized the Kingdom of Hawaii.
Kamehameha III rewrote the traditional laws about land ownership,
allowing foreigners to own land in Hawaii for the first time. By 1893,
90% of the real estate in Hawaii was owned by non-natives, which
just goes to show you that real estate developers have been around
since the dawn of time.
Then Kamehameha IV (the nephew of K-III) took over in 1854, and
with his wife established Queens Hospital for sick and destitute
Hawaiians. He ruled for about 9 years before he died of acute
asthma. In 1865 the Leprosy colony was established on Molokai,
and in 1873 Father Damien de Vuester, a Belgian Roman Catholic
missionary, arrived to be an advocate for those in the colony.
The beginning of the end for native rule began with the reign of David
Kalakaua, known as the Merry Monarch because he was such a
party guy who ruled from 1874 until his death in San Francisco in
1891. He was the last king of Hawaii, and was succeeded by his
sister, Queen Lilioukalani who was deposed in 1893 and kept in
virtual captivity for the next three years by the new government set up
by the United States until they annexed Hawaii in 1898. And, of
course, Hawaii became the 50th state in 1959.
Today, Hawaii is one of the premium vacation spots on earth with
tourists coming from around the globe to enjoy their time in the sun
and on the sand and in the surf to the tune of about billion
annually spent on Hawaii vacations! And no wonder with all this
natural beauty to behold and benefit from people find themselves
returning again and again to Paradise!
So lets take a look at what Hawaii has to offer!
Hawaii (a.k.a. The Big Island)
Legend has it that two warring deities, the volcano goddess Pele and
the demi-god Kamapuaa (who controlled the weather) divided the
island of Hawaii in two after a fierce battle, which explains why one
side of the island is so dry and the other side is so tropical. Who
knows it could have happened that way!
The island of Hawaii, also know as the Big Island, is just that more
than twice the size of all the other islands
combined, a little more than 4,000 square miles. And with two active
volcanoes still smoking and erupting and sending out spectacular
rivers of molten lava the Big Island is kind of like that pesky
Energizer bunny it just keeps going and going and going
Actually, the volcanoes are one of the coolest things to see on the Big
Island Kilauea is the longest continuously erupting volcano in the
world today its been fussing and steaming and causing a ruckus
since 1983. Tourists and scientists come from all over the world to
study it and look at it and take pictures of it how often do you get to
see Mother Nature in action up close and personal?
Take the time to drive from Kona around to the Kilauea Visitors
Center in about 2 hours and 30 minutes you can go from tropical
paradise to a moonscape where it looks like nothing has lived for
hundreds of years its eerie and beautiful all at the same time.
There are other volcanoes on the Big Island, too Mauna Loa, which
last erupted in 1984 and sent lava within a few miles of Hilo, a small
town on the east side of the island, plus three more Mauna Kea and
Kohala, which are extinct, and Hualalai, which volcanologists
consider to be dormant, since it last erupted in 1801. But theres still
a whole lot of activity going on!
And speaking of volcanoes, you wont be able to see it but it might
interest you to know that about 15 miles off the southeast coast of the
Big Island theres another volcano called Loihi, thats erupting about
3,000 feet below the surface of the ocean. While scientists think it
will take several thousand years for this new one to break the surface
of the ocean, they calculate its already risen about 10,000 feet above
the sea floor so another island is in the making. Get your deposits

Another cool thing about the Big Island is the climate Ive already
talked about how dry it is on the west side (only about 10 inches of
rain a year) and how tropical it is on the east (about 128 inches a year
at Hilo!) so you can pretty much find any type of weather youre
looking for. Even snow. Yep. Snow in Hawaii. Who wouldve
thought? The volcano peaks of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa (at over
13,000 feet!) are often blanketed with snow. Average temps vary by
region, but usually range in the 70s to 80s most of the time.
So what kinds of activities are there to do on the Big Island? Oh my
gosh where do we start? From hiking the spectacular coastlines to
golfing to dining at fine restaurants to fishing for some of the biggest
billfish in the world, there entertainment factor is almost endless!
